AI-supported healthcare delivery – Why we are falling behind other sectors? (Part 1)

The main value proposition of artificial intelligence is to fulfill the tasks and procedures that consume the doctor’s time and break the bond between them and the patient, and to give them back the meaning they have lost in their professional lives.

The reason why artificial intelligence applications in health are not adopted as quickly as in other sectors is due to the fact that clinicians and entrepreneurs (and data scientists) do not work together. However, they can work. Here, the value proposition must be created correctly. When you search for the term artificial intelligence on Google today, the first thing you see is “Will artificial intelligence take away jobs?” comes out. According to the research of the Artificial Intelligence and Technology Association (YZTD), the situation is not much different in our country: Those who are worried about losing their jobs with the spread of artificial intelligence in Turkey are quite high, at 84%. Naturally, health professionals are afraid of losing their importance and then their jobs. However, today doctors spend much more time finding things in hospital automation systems than they do with the patient (1). This leads to information overload and information fatigue, and does not provide additional legitimacy to employees.

The main value proposition of artificial intelligence is not to examine patients instead of doctors, but to perform tasks and procedures that consume the doctor’s time and break the bond with the patient. Artificial intelligence companies and products can thus help doctors “restore lost meaning in their lives” (2). The value propositions of artificial intelligence should not be considered only on an individual basis. It also provides numerous operational benefits for the system. Reinforced systems can reduce patient stays by tens of thousands of hours, thus increasing the capacity utilization rate without any investment, approaching the normal capacity of the system or even exceeding the design capacity. In this way, millions of liras are saved in every hospital (3). We can add MRI devices, beds, operating rooms, respirators and thousands of other items to our hospitals without investing in additional fixed assets.

(1) The ratio of time spent by physicians in the hospital automation system to the total visit time is 59.5% in England (Source: Milne H, et al. How much of a doctor’s on-call shift is spent serching equipment and paperwork? A mixed methods study. Future Hosp J. 2016; 3:s1).

(2) This approach -in the context of brands- Mr. It is explained in more detail in Haluk Sicimoğlu (Thaat’s It! Founder and Strategy Manager)’s speech titled The Psychology of Brands in the New Normal, given at the Global Marketing Summit & Exhibition 2021.

(3) This saving is thought to be at the level of 200 billion Euros or 1.8 billion hours of professional workforce annually across Europe.
